Fernando Pessoa Tour

The life and times of Fernando Pessoa considered by many to be Portugal’s greatest poet.

Fernando Passo was born in 1888, after the death of his father and brother his mother remarried and they moved to Durban, South Africa. At the age of 17 he returned to Lisbon and work as translator and writer for his avant- garde magazine Orpheu. His career as a writer Pessoa was virtually unknown and he published little of his work and finally died in obscurity in 1935. The tour traces the life of this enigmatic poet starting in the Barrio Chiado where he was born and through the streets of Lisbon finishing at the Martinho da Arcada coffee shop in Commerical Square where he would have coffee and the walls are adorned with his photographs.

Lisbon Jewish Tour

A tour that explores the history and cultural effect of the Jewish community in Lisbon, from the first Jewish settlement to the present day.

The tour starts with a visit to the Castle of St Jorge with superb views over Lisbon and the River Tagus, followed by a walk through the Barrio Alfama, a labyrinthine of narrow cobbled streets built by the Moors and where a large numbers of Jews settled in the 15th Century, many of them fleeing from Castle of St Jorge after their eviction by the Catholic Kings and stopping for a visit at the nearby ancient Shaarei Tikvah synagogue. The Barrio Baixa you can find a collection of tombstones one of which, the Monchique Stone, has inscriptions written in Hebrew and up to the 14th Century there was a small Jewish community living here.  In the afternoon the tour makes its way to Belem to visit Torre de Belem and Mosteiro dos Jeronimos both registered as a UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Escape to the mountains of Serra da Arrabida, explore the 12th Century Castle of Sesimbra and taste the local Muscatel wines of Jose Maria da Fonseca.

Starting from Lisbon the tour makes its way across the Abril 25 suspension bridge over the River Tagus. First stop will be the magnificent 12th Century Castle of Sesimbra with its commanding hill top position and sweeping views over the Atlantic, surrounding countryside and the picturesque fishing villages and beaches that line the coast. There will be a chance to stop at the town of Azeitao for a guide tour and tasting at the wine cellars of Jose da Fonseca which produces the local Muscatel wines. In the afternoon the tour makes it ways to the mountains and nature reserve of Serra da Arrabida, an oasis of natural beauty with breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon. Returning back to Lisbon you cross the River Tagus using the Vasco de Gama bridge with a span of 18km makes it the longest in Europe.

The Gardens of Lisbon Tour

The gardens have been select for their beauty, rareness of plants and their historical significance with several being internationally renowned visited by scientists and botanists from across the world.

Science Faculty Botanical Garden was built in the early 19th century to serve the Science Academy and is considered to be one of the most important botanical gardens in Europe. The garden contains approximately 2.500 species some of which some are extremely rare, a palm-tree alleyway and a labyrinth of small paved paths. Estufa Fria Garden opened in 1910 and is one of the most popular spots in the city. It contains a wide variety of plants from all around the world and with its statues, fountains and palm trees makes this romantic garden an ideal spot to escape from the city’s hot temperatures during summer.

The Tropical Overseas Garden has some extremely rare tropical and subtropical trees and plants gathered from Portugal’s former colonies. Sometimes known as Jardim do Ultramar, the garden is a great attraction for leading international scientists and botanists. C. Gulbenkian Foundation Garden hosts an open air auditorium which serves for performing arts during summer, with its sculptures and pond makes it a worthwhile visit.

The Expo98 built for Lisbon’s World Fair on May 22, 1998 a stunning modernist achievement commemorating Lisbon’s close association with the sea and Vasco de Gama’s arrival in India in 1498.

Europe's biggest aquarium, designed by the American architect Peter Chermayeff, is considered by many to be not only an enduring symbol of Expo98 but also the centerpiece of the Expo. With 6 million visitors passing through the Expo via the the Gare do Oriente  mezzanined rail, metro and bus station designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, using a distinctive medium of steel, concrete and glass.

Other landmarks include the 15,000 seat Utopia Pavilian whose curved wooden ceiling symbolises the upturned hull of a ship and the Portuguese Pavilion by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza Vieira that integrates a thin concrete canopy suspended over a plaza. The tour includes a drive over the River Tagus using the 17.2km long Vasco da Gama Bridge the longest in Europe. A cable stayed bridge flanked by viaducts opened in March 29th 1998 just in time for the Expo.
